France to Partially Abolish COVID Vaccine Passport Requirement on March 14

The French authorities have decided to put to an end another COVID-19 measure, after evaluation that the virus-related situation in the country is relatively better and allows for such a measure to be lifted.

On Thursday, the French Prime Minister Jean Castex said in a press release that starting from March 14, Monday, the obligation to carry a COVID-19 vaccination passport in order to access indoor areas such as cafeterias, restaurants, cinemas, stadiums, fairs, and similar places.

“After the 5th wave of COVID-19 of unprecedented magnitude, the health situation has improved markedly for several weeks. In particular, the pressure weighing on hospitals due to the epidemic is greatly reduced, allowing the lifting of white plans and a gradual resumption of scheduled activities,” the Minister said.

Yet, the obligation to carry the pass in order to attend places like hospital entrances, establishments for the disabled, and elderly home care will remain in effect in order to continue protecting those most vulnerable from the virus.

In a statement for BFM TV, French Health Minister Olivier Véran said that the obligation to carry the pass in order to attend these places would also be removed soon.

When we have emptied intensive care units, or at least (…) when there is no further cancellation of procedures and if no new variant is in circulation, then the utility of the vaccine pass will be debatable,” the Minister said.

Asked when this might be, the Minister noted that the conditions to remove the pass might be met before July if the COVID-19 situation continued to improve for the better with the current steps.

The vaccine pass will come to an end, and judging by current trends, it is likely that the end will come before the month of July,” he noted.
